Winter League Players
WinterLeague Baseball is played during winter. It is an extremely popular format of the game. It is gaining support from fans not only within the US but also, worldwide. Typically, Winter League players are not well recognized. This league is an excellent platform to the new baseball players to come into limelight with their performance. Popular Winter Leagues are the Arizona Winter League, the Hawaii Winter League, and the Dominican Winter Baseball League. A brief introduction of Winter League players is given below:
Hawaii Winter League Players
Buster Posey - Selected by the San Francisco Giants (5th overall) in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, Buster Posey is one of the most successful Hawaii Winter League players. The player made his MLB debut on September 11, 2009 for the San Francisco Giants. He was born on March 27, 1987.
Mitsuo Yoshikawa - Born on April 6, 1988 in Fukuoka, Japan, this Hawaii Winter League Player played for Nippon Ham Fighters, and Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Mitsuo Yoshikawa is primarily a pitcher.
Andrew Brackman - Another promising Hawaii Winter League player is Andrew Brackman. Born on December 4, 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio, this pitcher was selected by the New York Yankees in the 1st round (30th) of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft. He also plays for the New York Yankees organization.
Yonder Alonso - He is a First baseman for the Cincinnati Reds organization. Yonder Alonso was chosen in the 15th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins. On August 26, Yonder Alonso made his Minor League debut for the Class A Sarasota Reds.
Dominican Winter Baseball League Players
Wilson Betemit - Wilson Betemit was born on November 2, 1981 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is an infielder and switch-hitter. He plays for the Kansas City Royals. He made his MLB debut on June 26, 2001 for the Atlanta Braves. This Dominican Winter Baseball League Player has also played for the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees, and the Chicago White Sox.
Willy Mo Pena - Known for his pure power hitting and tape-measure home runs and high strikeout rate, Willy Mo Pena is another well known Dominican Winter League player. He was born on born January 23, 1982 in Laguna Salada, Dominican Republic and made MLB debut on September 10, 2002 for the Cincinnati Reds. The teams that he played for are the Cincinnati Reds, the Boston Red Sox, and the Washington Nationals.
Kevin Barker - Born on July 26, 1975 in Bristol, Virginia is now a free agent. He started his MLB career on September 19, 1999 for the Milwaukee Brewers. He has also played for the Cincinnati Reds, the San Diego Padres, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
