Winter League Baseball

Winter League Baseball as the name suggests, is played in winter. It takes place across different provinces of the United States and in many other parts of the world. It provides an excellent opportunity to new players to come into limelight by dint of their performance. Winter League Baseball is called by different names in different places. Given below are a few of these:-
Dominican Winter Baseball League
This winter baseball league comprises six baseball teams that are spanned across the Dominican Republic. In fact, it is the highest baseball League played at the domestic level in the region. In Spanish, it is known as Liga de Beisbol Professional de la Republic Dominicana. Top players from the MBL play in this tournament. The champion in this league then plays in the Caribbean Series. Every team has to play 50 games that start from October end and spans over the end of December. Given below are the four Dominican teams that were initially formed at the beginning of the 20th century:-
  • Tigres del Licey (1907)
  • Estrellas Orientales (1911)
  • Sandino, later renamed Las Águilas (1937)
  • Leones del Escogido (1921)
Two other teams that have been added to the list are Aguilas Cibaenas of Santiago and Toros del Este of La Romana.
Hawaii Winter League
The Hawaii Winter League is also known as HWB. It has its origin in Honolulu. It is played as a professional baseball league in the Hawaiian island of Oahu. For some time in the past, HWB was associated with MLB. In the year 1993, the first ever HWB league was played. Players from many recognized baseball organizations participate in HWB. This includes MLB, Nippon Professional Baseball, Korea Baseball Organization as well as the independent leagues.
Arizona Winter League
The Arizona Winter League is actually an independent baseball league which is played over a short span of time. It is affiliated to the Golden Baseball League that is in turn an independent league itself. The Arizona Winter League came into existence on 15th November, 2006 and has its headquarters in Arizona. The Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona hosts the games of this league. Free agents get a great opportunity to participate in this league and prove their talent along with the other regular players.
