Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are a part of the Central Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. Along with the ‘Chicago White Sox’, they are the only other team that is based in Chicago. They are nicknamed as ‘The North Siders’. They are also known as ‘The Boys in Blue’ and ‘The Cubbies’. It is interesting to note that the Chicago Cubs are the only team that has not won a franchise championship in 102 years.

History of the Chicago Cubs

To begin with, the years during 1870 to 1875 were the initial years of the ‘Chicago White Stockings’. During 1902 and 1920, the franchise was known as ‘Chicago Colts’. All through the years the team had undergone a total metamorphosis and their approach to the game has also changed for good. In 1989, they became the National League East Champions. In 2006, the Chicago Cubs finished the National League (Central Division) with 66 straight wins.

They won the National League (Central Division) title in 2007 and successfully defended it in the following year in 2008. During this period, the franchise acquired Alfonso Soriano who was reported to be under a very lucrative contract with the Cubs. Very recently, the Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Piniella is reported to comment that the team has an optimistic approach and is looking forward to recreate the magic it weaved in the past.

Achievements of the Chicago Cubs

On 23rd April 2008, the Chicago Cubs recorded their 10,000th win against the Colorado Rockies. This was their record history since the time when the National League in the year 1876. However, the record was pitted against 9465 losses. It is interesting to note that the Chicago Cubs is the only second team in the Major League Baseball to have achieved this milestone. The first club was the ‘San Francisco Giants’ who reached this record in the year 2005.
